My tears had given way to anger. I was confused and violently upset. I fought with my husband until he left for his job, working second shift at the John Deere Tractor Works in Waterloo. Shortly after he'd left the house, I decided to drive to Cedar Falls to visit a close friend. Mary was someone with whom I had worked ten years earlier. We both hated the war, and she was faced with the worry of a young son approaching draft age. I didn't tell her why I had come. The afternoon was spent in good conversation and music.
From a young age Michael knew he would go to college. As he grew up, he worked whenever he could to earn his way. On his first job, at age eleven, he cut asparagus on a farm two miles away. , pedaled his bike to the farm, and cut for two hours before school. Then he would hurry home to eat breakfast and catch the school bus. He earned about forty dollars each spring and banked every penny of it. Workers were paid by the weight of each basket picked, and through this method of payment he was introduced to dishonesty on the job for the first time in his life.
S. finally reached an agreement in March 1973 with the North Vietnamese. Our troops were withdrawn in disgrace and defeat. The war continued until 1975, when Saigon fell to the Communists from the north. During these years my husband, Gene, and I lived on a small farm in Black Hawk County, Iowa. The farm didn't produce enough income to support our family of four, so Gene worked off the farm at the John Deere Tractor Works in nearby Waterloo. The job enabled us to forge ahead in improving the farm, send our children to a private college-prep high school, then to college and graduate school.
